In One Year, Ramp-Up Students Outpace Other Students on State Test

The Challenge

  • In 2006, few students in the Warren City School District in northeastern Ohio scored well enough on the Ohio Achievement Test to meet proficiency levels. This instructional challenge was coupled with a major organizational challenge—opening new schools and transitioning from elementary and middle schools to a K–8 structure. The district wanted instructional solutions that would work in the existing middle schools in the 2006–07 school year and in the new K–8 schools in the 2007–08 school year.

The Solution

  • America’s Choice is helping the district with both sets of challenges with instructional solutions and professional development that build a seamless instructional system. The district implemented Ramp-Up Mathematics at three middle schools.

The Results

  • Ramp-Up students in all grades made strong gains in proficiency compared with other Warren students. The results below were based on approximately 750 Ramp-Up students and 450 non-Ramp-Up students.
  • Both veteran and new teachers experienced success with the program.
  • For students enrolled in Ramp-Up Mathematics, the percentage scoring in the lowest category on the Ohio Achievement Test decreased more than 10 percent, while those not enrolled showed little to no change.
