Expertly-Crafted Student Materials Promote Learning

Students work with three resources every single day in the Ramp-Up Workshop.

  1. The Student Edition provides all of the mathematics content and the problems.
  2. Students use the Mathematics Notebook to record assignments, complete class work, and do homework.
  3. The most indispensable resource, the hardcover Concept Book, should be on students’ desks at all times and referenced frequently; it holds everything students need to understand the critical concepts.

These Ramp-Up Mathematics materials promote the value of deep conceptual understanding—in other words, depth over breadth. Students will not find endless rows of practice problems. What they will find are carefully selected problems that are far richer in context, potential for expansion, and level of scaffolding.

Also evident in the materials is Ramp-Up’s dedication to a language-rich environment. Fluency in mathematical language is essential for success on state tests and beyond. Ramp-Up emphasizes the importance of learning to communicate mathematically, and the best way to do that is to read, write, and talk about mathematics daily. All materials are text-friendly—that is, they offer expanded narrative explanations as well as explicit definitions, visuals, and numerous examples.

Student Editions

Students receive a separate non-consumable, softcover Student Edition for each of the eight units. The units include 15–20 carefully scaffolded lessons with embedded assessments. The Student Editions follow the same general format as the Teacher Editions. Student Editions, which present the mathematics in the frame of the daily workshop format, are meant to be re-used.

Concept Book

The hardcover Concept Book is a critical reference for students and should become an integral part of their Ramp-Up experience. It is organized by related concepts, and it explains them with plain language, explicit definitions, and numerous examples.

Homework Book

Optional Homework Books include the entire year’s homework assignments; the Student Editions also contain the homework. Though these books are consumable, students may elect to complete their homework in their Mathematics Notebooks. Homework Books are available in Spanish.

Mathematics Notebook

Ramp-Up Mathematics and the extended workshop engage students in sustained periods of math work. Because they are working longer and more deeply, students simply produce much more written material than they do in normal math classes. Students purchase their own notebooks, which can be college-ruled tablets, lined spiral notebooks, small tabbed binders, blank notebooks, or whatever type works best for the students to record their daily work. A single problem from the Student Edition typically inspires at least two different strategies, multiple representations, answers in numerical and sentence form, various notes, and often, new variations on the original problem.
