Mathematics Navigator is designed to fit the particular scheduling needs of elementary and secondary schools. The elementary modules are typically delivered in 30-minute sessions by a teacher or paraprofessional (who does not have to be a math expert). The secondary modules are often delivered by a math teacher in a 45-minute class during the school day. Both the elementary and secondary modules work during school hours and in after-school, weekend, and summer programs. If the program is delivered during the school day, the master schedule is adjusted to provide the needed time periods. If the program is delivered after school or in summer school, time blocks are adjusted to fit the module expectations.
The first step in implementing Mathematics Navigator is to administer the diagnostic screener to determine which students would benefit from the intervention program and which modules each student needs. Grouping students around the particular skill or concept in which they have developed misconceptions or misapplications focuses the teaching and targets the need. Some students may need to take only one instructional module; other students may require several.
Teachers or paraprofessionals who teach Mathematics Navigator access the training through the America’s Choice Community of Learners website. They also read the materials carefully to understand the program’s routines and rituals.
Mathematics Navigator is also available as an online tutoring option with one-to-one delivery of instruction.
