In the Mathematics Institute for High School teachers, the mathematics content focuses on critical concepts in Math 1; specifically around the tasks imbedded in the Georgia Math 1 Mathematics Framework. The focus of this training will be tasks around the following standards: MM1A1: Students will explore and interpret the characteristics of functions, using graphs, tables, and simple algebraic techniques, MM1A2: Students will simplify and operate with radical expressions, polynomials, and rational expressions, and MM1A3: Students will solve simple equations. Emphasis is on scaffolding the learning to engage all students in the core content while addressing possible gaps and misconceptions from prior years.
In both institutes, lesson-planning guides will focus on conceptual lesson planning and provide teachers with strategies for addressing the needs of learners, the misconceptions they bring into the mathematics classroom, and the challenges they present. In addition, the Institutes focus on imbedding strategies and habits that support student success in mathematics assessments, for example, reasoning and estimation, and learning from incorrect answers.
