Students in Abbott District Exceed Expectations
The Challenge
As one of New Jersey’s 30 Abbott districts, the East Orange School District is under court order to improve education for economically disadvantaged urban children.
The Solution
East Orange implemented the Ramp-Up Mathematics with 5th and 6th graders in the 2003–04 school year and included students–at, below, and above grade level.
The Results
After one year, students in Ramp-Up Mathematics as a whole, exceeded expected gains on the district’s Terra Nova math test. All things being equal, students are expected to stay at the same level from year to year on the normal curve equivalent scale (NCE). Ramp-Up students increased their performance on the Terra Nova test by 7.1 NCEs. Students initially performing below grade level did even better, exceeding expected gains by 8.1 NCEs.
